Why Is My Child Guessing Words Instead of Sounding Them Out?

Most parents do the right things. Reading every night. Pointing out letters. Practising the alphabet. And yet somewhere along the way, reading still doesn't click, and your child starts guessing at words instead of working them out.

This isn't a sign your child isn't trying, and it isn't a sign you're doing something wrong. It's usually a sign of one specific gap: your child has learned to recognise some words by shape, without ever fully learning the system underneath them.

Why guessing happens

Children are pattern spotters. If a word looks familiar, roughly the right length, starts with the right letter, they'll often guess based on shape and context rather than actually decode it. This works for a while, especially with short, common words like "the" or "and." It stops working the moment words get longer or less familiar, and that's usually when parents notice something is off.

The real fix isn't more repetition of the same words. It's building the underlying skill guessing is standing in for: the ability to connect each letter and letter pattern to its sound, in order, every time.

What actually helps

Three things make the biggest difference, in this order.

First, sound awareness before letters. A child needs to hear the individual sounds inside a word before matching those sounds to letters makes any sense.

Second, letter sounds taught in a logical order, not alphabetical order. Some letter sounds are far more useful early on than others, and teaching them in the order they actually show up in real words speeds everything up.

Third, blending practice. This is the step most home teaching skips. It's the bridge between knowing individual sounds and reading a whole word, and it needs its own dedicated practice, not just exposure.

The bigger picture

Guessing isn't a character flaw or a sign your child is behind. It's what happens when the shortcut is easier than the system, and no one has shown them the system yet. Once they have it, the guessing tends to disappear on its own, because there's no longer a reason to guess.

If you want a clear starting point for building this system at home, The Letter Code breaks down all 44 sounds and how they're spelled, free to download.
